House Staff Stipends and Benefits: 2009-2010

The benefits and salaries provided here are currently in effect.  They are subject to review and may be revised at the end of the program year.

Annual Salaries
PGY I: $46,414 | PGY II: $49,092 | PGY III: $51,745 | PGY IV: $54,425 | PGY V: $60,682

Medical:

Huntington Hospital offers an EPO plan utilizing the Blue Cross Prudent Buyer Network at no cost to the Residents.  Coverage for family members is available at the Resident’s expense.  Under the (EBO) EPO Plan, services provided by Huntington Hospital or affiliates of Huntington Hospital are covered at 100% (Out-Patient Surgery, Laboratory & X-Ray Testing, Physical Therapy, etc.).  Prescription Benefits and Mental Health Benefits are also available under the Medical Plan. (A second medical plan option will be added – revision due to come by 11/2009)

Dental:

Dental benefits are provided through three different plans - Delta Preferred Plus, Delta Preferred or Delta Care USA (HMO).  Delta Preferred Plus and Delta Preferred have an annual limit of $2,000 and $1,200 respectively and a $50 annual deductible per person, $100 per family.  Diagnostic and Preventive Care have no deductible.  Orthodontic services are covered under Delta Preferred Plus and Delta Preferred at 50% up to $1,500 or $1,000 respectively. Family members may be added at the Resident’s expense.  Delta Care USA (HMO) has co-pays but no deductible and no annual limit.

Vision: Vision benefits are provided through Vision Services Plan (VSP) which allows for an eye examination and lenses every 12 months, and frames every 24 months.  Contacts may be selected in lieu of frames/lenses.
Life Insurance: Provided
Flexible Spending Reimbursement Account
Make pre-tax contributions to pay for health care and/or dependent care expenses:
  • Health Care Account (may contribute $100 to $5,000 annually)
  • Dependent Care Account (may contribute $100 to $5,000 annually)
Long-term Disability Insurance: The hospital provides this insurance that covers 60% of basic earnings up to $2,000 monthly.  There is a 60-day elimination period.
Liability Insurance Malpractice coverage is provided for residents while on duty in the hospital or on approved rotations at participating institutions.
Vacation Each resident receives four weeks of paid vacation.
Sick Leave Up to 12 days per year.
Holidays 6 per year
Meals There is a daily food allowance, which you can use in our cafeteria.
Uniforms White coats with your embroidered name are provided along with vouchers for dry-cleaning.
On-Call Rooms On-call rooms are provided and are assigned on a permanent basis for the duration of training.
Parking Free
Conference Fund:

Funds are available for attending conferences as:

  • presentation of research papers at local and national conferences (reimbursed up to $2,000 per conference)
  • Surgical Chief conference at ACS (American College of Surgeons or choice on one per year (reimbursed up to $2,000 per chief resident)
  • APDIM spring conference for upcoming internal medicine Chief Resident (reimbursed up to $1,500)
  • Chief review course for surgery boards “Osler” (reimbursed up to $2,000 per chief resident)
  • Reimbursement for oral board review course for graduated surgical chief if boards are passed (reimbursed up to $3,000 per chief resident)

All requests for conferences and travel must be pre-approved using the Travel Request Form.  Reimbursement requests for all pre-approved conferences and travel must be submitted within 30 days of travel date.

Educational Grant

$1000 discretionary educational grant is available for categorical residents to use for educational material such as books and educational software with an additional $1,000 grant for assistance in purchasing a laptop.  Both of these grants need to be used during their 3 year internal medicine residency or 5 year surgical residency with the approval from the program director. Preliminary residents will have $667.00 to use during their one year in our program, however they need to use the funds before December 31st with the approval from the program director.  The categorical residents need to use submit a request for reimbursement no later than 6 months before graduation. *(Refer to policy on Educational Stipend)

Certifications

All residents must maintain certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) throughout the residency training at Huntington Hospital.  These classes are supported and paid for by Huntington Hospital during your residency.  Surgical Chief Residents will be reimbursed for FLS Certification Course (up to $2,000 per chief resident).  Residents are strongly encouraged to complete the course through Huntington Hospital.  In the event that a resident must take an ACLS course outside of Huntington Hospital, they will be reimbursed at the rate of the Huntington Hospital course.

Licensure

Upon completion of the first year of training, all residents are required to apply for the California Medical License and subsequently the DEA license.  Both licenses are required and reimbursed by the program.  Graduates of US medical schools cannot begin their third year of training without a valid California Medical License.  Residents who graduate from foreign medical schools are required to apply for the California Medical License upon completion of 24 months of training and cannot begin their fourth year of training without a valid California Medical License.
